Hi! I’m Chrislyn. I’m currently based in Durham (NC) as an undergraduate at Duke University, where life is exceptionally colorful and abuzz with new windows of opportunity. Here alone I have encountered several of my most memorable shooting experiences: snapping (and being nearly flattened by) Duke’s illustrious Men’s Basketball team, frolicking in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens with newly engaged lovebirds, simultaneously capturing photos and wisdom at an MBA conference at the Fuqua School of Business, mingling with locals at a jazz benefit to provide housing for the homeless, documenting student life (from electrifying dance performances to midnight bridge-painting to religious services), combining portraiture with the stories of families at the Ronald McDonald House in Durham, and designing promotional portraits/posters/sites for both students and faculty…just to name a few. It’s been a whirlwind for me and my camera, and I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today as an artist without the special friends and strangers who have trusted me to splash their memories with my own colors!
So what role does photography play in my own life? Surely, it’s a way to express and interact; a dance between my senses and my environment. Moreover though, I like to think of photography as a lifestyle that keeps me grounded by cultivating my respect for others. An appreciation for the aesthetic opens my eyes to the inner beauty of each person I meet. Keen observational skills translate into listening before I speak. As my eyes and reflexes learn to read the subtle nuances of a photo subject, I’m becoming more appreciative of the stories that define people all around me. As another photographer once said, “When you photograph a face, you photograph the soul behind it!”
Right now, the biggest development in my work is my budding interest in film. The art of the moving image is uncharted territory for me, so I am beyond excited to spend my upcoming summer documenting the stories of the community of Medellín, Colombia, via DukeEngage 2014. Keep an eye out for our blog!
That’s a little slice of me. If any of this resonates with you, I’m happy to talk more! I’m always taking requests for shooting gigs (paid) and lunch (paid – just kidding), so contact me and we will set up a time to discuss whatever is important to you. Cheers!
